Replying to LO4684 -- Was: 3 Wishes for LO List

Rol Fessenden writes in support of Roy:

>Roy Winkler brings up an excellent issue. "How do we marry secondary and
>post-secondary education with the needs of the workplace in such a way
>that we condition individuals to be life-long learners by the time they
>enter the workforce?

I'll add my voice in enthusiastic support of such a thread, but I'll also
jump in immediately with a bit of a misgiving about the last phrase above.
I suspect that orienting learning to "the needs of the workplace" would
eventually prove to be counterproductive. When I read many of the
postings on this list, postings from people who pretty obviously are
making solid contributions to their organizations and their peers, its
apparent to me that the authors are coming from many places in the
intellectual universe that they wouldn't be occupying if their educations
had been focused on the needs of the workplace, at least as that phrase is
usually interpreted.

I used to tell my kids when they were growing up that I thought the point
of it all was to become as complicated as possible. I think I still think
that.
