Craig T. Smith at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, has just done
a very interesting master's thesis, in which he reviewed the scientific
and philosophical thinking underlying Deming's work and the quality
programs in general, with emphasis on combining and integrating the
foundational work of Shewhart (Deming's mentor) with the
scientific-philosophical thinking of Charles Sanders Peirce (America's
greatest philosopher).
For all those who are not content with buying TQM, QFD, affinity diagrams,
etc., without knowing more, I recommend that you consider trying to get a
copy of that work.
