Thank you for posing a difficult question. Most of us think about
improving society but feel powerless to do anything. My thoughts: In close
to 50 years, social change has been brought about community by community
by volunteers and community non-profit organizations. Social change has
not occured through government action. Government officials can promote
awareness, but the persuasion to change comes from the local level, from
people you know. Look at smoking, for example. Communities can and do set
their own norms.The best way to change society is to start with the
"minute particulars" as the poet Blake says. The questions to start with
are "How have I grown?', "How have I reached out to others to help them
grow?"
