RE: Choice is an Illusion? LO4447

Replying to LO4435 which said:

>The real bind of this thing about choice is not where it comes from
>or whether it exists. The issue is an existential question. Whether
>or not there is choice, you must be responsible for your actions.
>
>The courage that it takes to be responsible for your actions is the
>ultimate challenge. There is no escape from the dilemma. You can
>say that choice does not exist. You can say that it is determined or
>not. But it is always you that is saying and you that is choosing.
>And you must live with the consequences of what you say.

John Woods said,

There is a strange irony of human nature: we are absolutely responsible
for our actions and that is absolutely out of our hands. It is true that
we must live with the consequences of our actions, and we don't have a
choice about that.

** End Quotes **

This is directly relevant to the discussion of stages in professional
development in another thread. What is needed here is an understanding
that while we are obliged to make choices and live with the consequences
just as John has said, most of us are not conscious that we are doing so.
I think people who are _conscious_ that choice faces them, who understand
that they must live with the consequences, and finally who choose from
resources within themselves to act constructively, those people have
entered the 5th stage of professional development.

Those people can invest much time in that stage of development, or they
can go on into stages of management development.
