For those of us on the list whose consciousness was partially shaped by
Ferlinghetti, and the writers who congregated around City Lights, seeing
words again from Coney Island of the Mind was a bracing re-call to earlier
ideas of awakening. For those on the list who are new to Ferlinghetti, it
should be added that his words are meant to be heard, and not just read
off the page. Best, of course, would be with espresso in hand and a jazz
combo interplaying with the words (or is my nostalgia showing?), but for a
good second best, Ferlinghetti appears in Marty Scorsese's film of The
Band's final concert, "The Last Waltz" (one of the two or three best rock
films ever made).
