I guess I would tend to look for a 'process' that would tend to give
participants an opportunity to first have conversations with one another.
Hopefully using some of the basic tenets of 'dialogue'. After being able
to have participants get into a conversation with another and then several
other partcipants on a topic (say My most Powerful Learning Experience")
I'd have them being to share what their 'perfect school' looked like.
Part of this step would be to have them as individuals respond and then
share in a small group. Then have the them begin to note in (small
groups) those items that appear in each person's 'vision'. These points
of mutuality will give some information to work on later on. Finally, a
shared vision exercise (I like using the affinity diagram) to set up a
framework of the essential characteristic of a great school.
Something addressing the Values of the group should be included in the
process.
Generally, Mary, that's the 'nut' of how I'd approach the process of
building vision. Get 'em talking.
