I am a senior Education Social Worker in England (probably no such animal
in the U.S.) and I am currently doing a Post Graduate Certificate in
Management here in England. One of my course assignments is about Learning
Organisations - what they are or might be and how such a ideal might be
implemented in my own organisation.
As a net nerd of about a year's experience (:-' one of the first things I
did of course was to see what might be available on line. Stumbling around
I came across this list. Well that's me. A couple of questions to throw
into the hat if I may:
1) I work in a publicly funded organisation. My own department is a small
section of the Local Education Authority, a local government organisation.
Most of the stuff I have read about learning organisations (Handy, Senge,
etc.) seem to concern commercial organisations. My questions are:
1) Are there implicit problems in establishing local government agencies
as learning organisations.
2) Are there issues that are specific to such agencies and which do not
apply commercial organisations.
Just to finish off: I notice from my first digest that the subject, i.e.
-Learning Organisations- appears to have widened somewhat and covers all
kinds of learning issues, not just the area of evolving organisational
culture. Maybe this is about the inherent ambiguity of the term and the
difficulty there seems to be in defining its meaning. Just a passing
thought.
