There are lots of examples. I think of the "ghost dance" movement among
American Indians in the last century, of periodic Messianic movements, and
of a lengthy conversation in a Budapest hotel with a Hungarian physicist
friend about the then (3 years ago) popularity of bizarre, magical
theories offering "easy ways out" of the country's difficulties.
These movements seem to me to often coincide with perceived losses of
autonomy.
