As a new member let me share a little success story re learning from
training
First, I agree with Rol that "training is the manager's job" and most must
be done inside the organisation, and when training is needed from outside
the organisation there is a need to get sufficient people exposed to the
newthink for them to have a real hope that a successful guerilla war can
start inside.
Second, the story. I fully understand that what we did cannot be repeated
everywhere. I had an organisation of about 500 salespeople and 500
administration people all in the same personal life insurance business.
We needed to change the way we operated. Several 3-5 day courses where
identified and I and the top 20 odd managers went through the first
course. A short while later, my managers repeated the course with a group
of their subordinates .. and hence the new language and skills where, to
some extent, embedded into the whole of the top of the organisation. The
bosses led the way and hopefully modelled the new behaviours.
Third, a danger signal. every few years we send a senior exec to a US
business school (the same one) The pro is that we learnt to speak the same
language, the anti that we learn the same paradigm I guess that as long as
we are aware of the dangers, we're safer than we would be if we weren't
