I prefer to use the term "strategic thinking" for this activity to
differentiate it from planning which now has a negative connotation.

I can't imagine running a business without THINKING STRATEGICALLY!
Without it, companies drift with the pervailing winds and can't steer
their own destinies. Not thinking strategically in today's world is like
white water rafting without a paddle and without looking at the river you
are riding in for the obstacles, danger spots and safe eddies. I've
always appreciated the ability of raft guides who can read the river and
steer the boat.

I agree with Lois that the ongoing PROCESS of planning (or thinking) is
the key so you can maneuver together safely through the rapids, each and
every moment.
