Peter Senge led a series of videoconferences called "Applying the
Principles of the Learning Organization." The series was in three parts,
aired in December of 94 and March and May of this year. The format
included participation by a variety of people who have been involved in LO
application, one group from the Calgary Herald (a Canadian newspaper)
headed by its publisher.
In a dialogue about shared vision, he (the publisher) recounted his
surprise when he began to ask employees to project their vision of their
own futures (personal mastery) and found many envisioning themselves
*leaving* the newspaper's employ - images of life in retirement abounding.
After some conversations at the paper, it became clear that these
individual visions could be easily absorbed into the corporate vision;
that is, envisioning a solid retirement as a consequence of the paper's
success.
If you have a chance to view the video of the program, you can see how
genuine this is, both in the way in which it is described by the publisher
and in the glimpses of life at the paper. I believe this is a concrete
example of the process described by David, and a demonstration that goods
and ends which seem trite and/or idealistic are possible and achievable
through simple practices, when carried out with honesty.
