This is a request for some design advice for a large workshop. The
request is for ideas for designing a focusing day directly after
having run an Open Space.

We have been contracted to facilitate a 2-day workshop for
500 stakeholders (mostly community organisations, non-profits,
local government, business fora, sports bodies etc.) as preparation
for the Cape Town Olympic Bid for the year 2004.

The purpose is to put in place processes that draw deeply on
community wisdom and resources to ensure there is "sustainable
development" built into every aspect and that will enable stakeholders to
take ownership of the Olympic bid process - and if successful beyond
to 2004.

Not only is it a consultative workshop to get feedback, proposals and
ideas, but the Olympic Bid Company hopes to bring community
leadership onto its various committees.

The first day will be in Open Space around the theme:
"Can the Olympics be developmental? What do we need to get
right to make the Olympics a success for all?"

This is straightforward - an opening up, brainstorming. But day 2
requires much more focus and direction. We have in mind to keep the Open
Space open but to have just 1 or 2 sessions under a theme which calls
for concrete proposals and projects - these would then get written
onto newsprint by the groups and displayed ("window-shopped"). This
would be followed by a closure before a post-workshop session to work
with new people who have come forward with time to commit to the process.

Does anyone have ideas or experience at designing such a day 2 - how
to make it focused, directed and concrete? Plus any other ideas for
other aspects of the workshop?

Thanks.
