Phillip's story reminds me of the section in Zen and the Art of
Motorcycle Maintenance (Robert Pirsig) where the main character, a
college professor, goes into the a class room and refuses to lecture but
will answer any question put to him, much in the same way that Phillip's
friend does. When asked what they are supposed to be learning, he asks
what do they want to learn, and so on.
