Jean, you might want to give my wife a call. Her name is Vernell
Sutherland and she can be reached at 804-220-7174. She has her Ph.D. in
social psychology, an M.B.A., and a J.D. to boot! She has taught at the
secondary and college level. She has worked in various senior management
positions in the high-tech, management consulting, and health care
industries for the last 15 years or so. She really understands
organizations! Of particular relevance to your question, however, she now
directs one of the largest and most complex foundation-based volunteer
programs in the world: Volunteer Programs at Colonial Williamsburg
Foundation in Williamsburg, Virginia. She started this program from
scratch (essentially) a couple of years ago at the urging of the
Foundation's (then) new president, Bob Wilburn, who had come from the
Carnegie Foundation where he had made extensive use of volunteers. She
has grown the program from a hundred or so loosley organized volunteers to
a force -- that is the only term for it! -- of over 600 volunteers,
ranging from elementary school students to retirees.
