Something here caught my eye. (That's doing pretty good, since I'm sitting
here trying to clear out 179 messages in one evening.) (Two weeks, in the
hyper-time of this group discussion, is an eternity, long enough to evolve
and extinguish again a whole race of dinosaurs.)

Well, as far as I understand the matter, no. There are discontinuities in
things, and the deepest one I know of is between doing a thing and thinking
about the doing of that thing. It is a sign of prudence, not confusion, when
we separate the work of discussion from the work of reflecting on discussion.

Oh, I'm not advocating that these things be voluntarily or forcibly kept
apart. The men who were the Constitutional Convention, back in 1789, went
right on to participate in the government they had just defined. By parity
of reasoning, we might have a second mailing-list in which to discuss the
conduct of the first... .
