Tom Stewart brought up the *famous* innovations at 3M, mentioning their
standard as seeking 30% of revenue from products and services created
within the last 5 years. Senior management at 3M has upped the ante, now
targeting 40% in the last 4 years.

Tom obviously knows more about what's going on in business than I do, but
I would question comparing innovation at P & G with Rubbermaid or 3M.
Innovation at P & G has been almost exclusively in the packaging, and even
new inventions have been mostly in the core business.

By contrast, we often do not give enough credit to stuctural innovations
in organizations, which can have a greater impact on competitiveness than
new products and/or services. They're written up in the business
journals, but are invisible in the marketplace...
