Alec Johnson recommends Peter Block's book "Stewardship." I would
agree! While this is not a new book (1993) it is excellent as a
stand-alone reading or as a follow-up to his earlier work, "Empowered
Manager."

For those not familiar with Block's interpretation of the term
"stewardship", the author defines the term to be "the willingness to be
accountable for the well-being of the larger organization by operating in
service, rather than in control, of those around us. Stated simply, it is
accountability without control or compliance."

Joel Henning describes the work as the "antithesis to the current
thesis in our management and organizational theory." It is a "challenging
alternative for people who have passion for the business, who generate new
ideas, ways of doing things that result in knowledge that results in
innovative and unique products in the marketplace."

I would not advise this book to anyone who does not believe in
democracy in the workplace or to those who are squeemish about spiritual
and ethical values to be lived out at work.
