Why are we debating these "contradictory impulses," as John Snyder put it,
between valuing distinctions vs. wholeness?
To me, "intelligence" is like a glass of water to a thirsty person. If I'm
thirsty, it is meaningless to me to focus EITHER on filling up the glass
or on drinking it. Learning is a circle of seeing similarities and seeing
distinctions and seeing new similarities and seeing new distinctions. It
would be impossible to learn if we focused only on one.
