Re: LO722

Karl Lloyd asked about companies that compensate employees based on
organizational performance. There probably aren't many, and to find out who
they might be I would suggest contacting Alfie Kohn. He is the author of a
number of books, including _Punished by Rewards: The Trouble with Gold Stars,
Incentive Plans, A's, Praise, and Other Bribes_, and _No Contest: The Case
Against Competition_. I believe he is on the faculty at Harvard.

In an interview reported in the September, 1994 issue of CFO magazine, Kohn
refers to two "companies that have moved away from the reward-and-punishment
approach" - Nashua Tape and Marshall Industries.

If anyone's interested in notes from one of Kohn's presentations, let me know
and I'll make them available. If anyone gets a chance to hear him speak, GO!
He's dynamic, iconoclastic, and very persuasive (based on research, logic and
compassion).
