I am applying for a Fulbright Fellowship to Chile for 1996, where I
intend to research how local businesses respond to the challenges of
extremely rapid changes in the local, South American and global markets.
I am particularly interested in how these companies can manage changes in
their organizational culture to maximize their success. Based on a brief
visit to Chile in December 1994 and some very cursory research, the
challenge seems to be to engineer a shift from a tightly-controlled,
family-dominated business culture to a learning organization, with
significant decision-making authority delegated to front-line managers
and employees.

I am currently a half-time staff member at the University of Washington
School of Business Administration. I support an international management
program embedded within our MBA program, primarily by building networks
of business contacts in six countries (including Chile) and providing
career counseling to the MBA candidates.

In the other half of my life I am a Professional Coach, working with
executives, managers, professionals and entrepreneurs to help them
improve their business effectiveness and the balance of their personal
and business lives.

My previous experience includes 7 years of packaged goods marketing and
new product development experience at Frito-Lay, Inc., a division of
PepsiCo. I also have three years of experience as a professional
journalist, having worked as a newspaper reporter and editor in Texas and
New Mexico.

My academic credentials include an MBA in Marketing and Organizational
Behavior from Stanford, and a BA in International Relations, also from
Stanford.

I would welcome correspondence from anyone with experience or interest in
Latin America. I will also note that I can correspond in Spanish,
Italian and French, as well as English.

I look forward to participating in the group.
