Eric Bohlman's comments on commitment raise some interesting issues --
Lengthy quotes suggested that many instances of "commitment" problems are
really difficulties of understanding or difficulties of inadequate problem
definition. Problem formulation's a key element: if you're solving a
"problem" that isn't what's wrong, you may be getting great moral outrage
or superiority benefits, without improving the underlying, "real" problem.
(Reminds me of the current political process . all that posturing, and so
little real progress .)
