Check out the book (and extensive bibliography) "Making Connections"
by Renate Numella Caine and Geoffrey Caine. Addison-Wesley, 1994.
It's an application of the last 25 years' work in brain physiology
and cognitive science to teaching. All the research they have
examined increasingly supports the notion that learning happens best
when BOTH logical/analytical thought AND metaphoric/emotional styles
of thinking are activated at the same time.
