I've found this discussion on the use of metaphor fascinating.

I see metaphor as a vital tool to achieve new insights into a problem, issue
or situation. It can allow us to take entirely new perspectives and look
with different eyes at something (whoops - almost a tautology there).

When communicating the results I tend to agree that metaphor should be used
sparingly - a metaphor is after all only an approximation to reality, only a
model (which is bound to disagree with reality in some way).
