Actually, this idea of "learning from smart machines that make
us engage them" is very powerful, I asgree. One of the most
resonant books with it is the story "Hackers" by Steven Levy,
which starts with the MIT computer wizards of the early 1960s,
who gave up every other human drive (in some cases) because they
were so bent on learning for its own sake.
I've been thinking that Levy's "Hacker ethic" applies very
strongly to organization change work.
