they'll always have cod

April 27, 2003

Being able to drive, alas, does not mean being able to drive to Rhode Island. Even going to the cat shelter makes my arm sore. An hour and a half on I-495 is too much to hope for yet. Nancy is doing beeper coverage so can't spend an hour on the bus to come up here. Ned is out of town. My only company besides Wilbur is the happy horn hunter of Newfoundland.

Many fine caribou heads later I turn the page and it's two years later and our hero is on board a Norwegian whaling ship in search of the blue whale. A whaling memoir breaks out in the middle of a hook and bullet narrative! Blue whale numbers were already way down by then so it's amazing they found one for him to examine for his book on large British mammals and tragic that they were still killing them when they knew they were in decline. He prefaces his tale of chasing the blue whale with a history of the Grand Banks cod fishery. He ends that section claiming that the Newfoundlanders will always have cod. Ha! Little did he know.

Yesterday's big outing was a trip to Blockbuster. I managed to score Princess Mononoke this time. Also rented another Jackie Chan flick. The lines were so long it took me an hour to get out of there. Note to self: avoid Blockbuster on rainy Saturday afternoons. Note to self: buy Princess Mononoke. It will make life as a couch potato so much easier.
