It's far too warm for December 1st. I keep shedding layers of clothing 'til I'm down to my T-shirt while I'm counting the ducks at the cove. The hooded mergansers with their gorgeous crests sparkle in the sun as they surface from a dive flinging bright droplets of water everywhere. The males' crests shine blindingly white like little feathered beacons. You could navigate the shipping channel by following the hoodies. Hordes of wigeons are all over the place, including a male Eurasian wigeon, who is probably the same one who shows up at the cove every year. I think I might have spotted another one too, but all the ducks were moving around so much I can't be sure. And I never even bothered to count the gulls.

Nancy said she thought I might like The Gleaners and I. That turned out to be an understatement. I fell in love with it. I want to marry it. Can you marry a movie? We were both so exhilarated after seeing the 5:00 PM show at the Cable Car that I wanted to see it again immediately and then see every film Agnes Varda has ever made. Practically every frame was an incredibly beautiful photograph. Never have cabbages and potatoes in the fields after the harvest looked so marvelous. And the people were interesting too: everybody from the lawyer who says the tomato is as red as his bible the Penal Code to the homeless guy who makes sure he gets a balanced diet with the right amount of glucids when he picks up the vegetables from the street after the market closes.

Since the 5:00 show was the last of the day (there's some other movie playing at night), we went to Acme Video after dinner (Thai food at Pakarang) to see if we could rent Vagabond or some other Agnes Varda film. Vagabond was out, but they did have Jaquot and 101 Nights of Cinema or whatever that one is called. Then I noticed, on the shelf above Agnes Varda, The Lumiere Brothers' First Films (from Kino International the same folks who brought us the fabulous yak music video). Nancy was curious about the Lumiere brothers because they're mentioned in The Gleaners and I. One of the people Varda interviews is a descendent of Marey, who invented the chronocinematograph or whatever it's called - basically the guy who invented moving pictures before the Lumiere brothers. So anyway we decided to rent The Lumiere Brothers' First Films instead. Now I want to marry that too! In fact, that video compilation of a whole bunch of 50 second films would be reason enough for me to buy a VCR - something I have never wanted before in my life.

After all this visual excitement, I long to go out and take pictures. Maybe tomorrow.
