I was going to write about how the Merrimack River used to flow almost straight south to Massachusetts Bay until the glacier came down and diverted it so it makes that little elbow at Lowell and flows out to the Gulf of Maine in Salisbury/Newburyport. Oh and also about how some writers think the glacial personality of flinty old New Englanders is related to the aftermath of the actual glacier. But it is wicked humid and I am wicked tired. So you'll have to read the beginning part of Salt Rivers of the Massachusetts Coast yourselves if your public library hasn't deaccessioned it yet. Deaccessioned, what a great word. |
