- I'm still doing my interdisciplinary, multimedia,
auto didactic course on Thoreau. May should have its own
volume in the journals. I started jotting down words,
plant names, and bird names that I didn't know, looking
them up, and jotting down the definitions. Kind of like
the old-fashioned commonplace book where people wrote
down inspiring passages from what they were reading, but
different.
Today's Thoreau secret decoder ring entries:
tholepin
- a pin or either of a pair of pins, made of metal or
wood and set vertically in the gunwale of a boat to serve
as a fulcrum for an oar
- Cerasus pumila -
- Prunus susquehanae, sand cherry
- Linaria Canadensis -
- Linaria canadensis, blue
toadflax
- Fringed polygala -
- Polygala paucifolia, Fringed
polygala
- Viola Muhlenbergii -
- Viola conspersa, dog violet. Couldn't find a
picture, but they have two specimens at the New
York Botanical Garden.
- Veronica peregrina -
- Veronica peregrina, purslane
speedwell.
- Polygonatum pubescens -
- Polygonatum pubescens, hairy solomon's seal.
Couldn't find a picture on the first 10 links I got from
the google.com search. It's a pretty common weed with
greenish white bell-shaped flowers and leaves with a
hairy underside.
- cratægus -
- Hawthorn, another one of those folk
remedies. Thoreau didn't say which of the several
species of hawthorn he was looking at.
- Cerastium viscosum -
- Cerastium vulgatum , common
mouse-ear chickweed
- Ranunculus bulbosus -
- Ranunculus bulbosus , bulbous buttercup -

- Polygala verticillata -
- Polygala verticillata, whorled milkwort

- Sylvia maculosa -
- Dendroica magnolia - magnolia warbler - a
