Part I: Learning from Stage Magicians


Magicians have struggled for 5000 years with the principles, techniques, and ethics of illusions.

1960-70's: Designers at Xerox PARC called the interface a "user illusion".

Bruce Tognazzini ("Tog") popularized this connection in "Magic and Software Design".



Some software designers have been explicitly learning from magicians for decades.

Tog has written several articles on this subject but I've linked to the one that is publicly available on his web site. It has links to many other resources.
