The Media Equation for Digital Artists

A work can have a universe of different personalities within it, using minimal technology.

If you want your users to employ default social approaches to your work, first overload or distract them.

Once the social bonds have been made, breaking the spell violating the users' assumptions will disturb them deeply. (This may be a goal.)

I think it could be very powerful to combine the attention-controlling tricks from stage magic, with the understanding that users whose attention is distracted will act like they're reacting to personalities...those are approaches I'm trying in my own digital art.

Some related work, an idea that could be called "the comics equation":  Scott McCloud's analysis of how comics readers "see themselves" and insert themselves into comics, and what makes that more or less likely. I recommend both his books; his latest, Reinventing Comics, has an online component on his web site.
