Humans engrossed in a task use "default assumptions" for social interactions they're not paying explicit attention to; thus they inadvertently invest TVs and computers with "personality".

A text-only interface is clearly sufficient to project this personality.

Multiple or separate personalities are perceived when tone, voice, or visuals change.

The more "lifelike" a digital character, the more disappointed we are that it doesn't "behave" like a living creature. High tech tools cut both ways...

Important: these are my paraphrases.
[read 1st bullet] I've heard it said that multitasking is a myth, at least where the rational mind is concerned. People who seem to be multi-tasking are really time-slicing. You might want them to do that to get a certain effect....
But more importantly, if they're distracted, they will "naturally" slip into a social relationship with computers and other media.
[read 2nd bullet] Anyone who's been in a MOO feels this is true...
