12-Dec-99 Walk in the Woods
We found out about Moose Hill Audubon Sanctuary a couple of years ago when we sold stamps at the Sharon Creative Arts Society sale. The people from the sanctuary had a nearby booth, and we talked to them during slow times in the show (and a lot of that show was slow times for both of our booths). It was so windy this weekend that we thought a walk in the woods would be better than a walk by the shore. Between the parking lot and the front door of the visitor center we saw the best bird of the day -- a red-breasted nuthatch at one of the feeders. The rest of the walk went uphill from there. I don't mean it got better, necessarily; it went up Moose Hill. We walked up a good steep trail to the base of the Moose Hill fire lookout tower, then down and around to a lookout over a high bluff. Moose Hill is only half as high as the Great Blue Hill a few miles to the north, but the bluffs have a spectacular view (by Southern New England standards). The woods were full ot titmice, but no birds to beat the nuthatch. By the way, we've had pine siskins at our feeder at home. The woman at the visitor center desk at Moose Hill said they've had some there, too. Please let me know if I have any broken links or missing images here. I haven't been particularly together at maintaining this site lately.
