28-Oct-99 Shorter days

Well of course there's less daylight this time of year. What do I expect? I'm always surprised at how much darker it is, though, coming home by bike at about the same time, than it was last week.

At some point when I was a kid I used to look in the newspaper for time of sunrise and sunset every day, and noticed how the times changed from day to day. Then my father brought home a copy of the Old Farmer's Almanac, which had all the sunrise and sunset times for the year in one place. It sure was convenient, but it took the mystery out of it.

There's a stretch of dirt road with huge potholes alongside Edmands Park on my way home. The streetlights are too far apart to show the bumps, so I need to rely on my bike's headlight at that point. What I've been thinking as I've been riding home the last couple of days is, “What I really don't want to do is run over a skunk on my bicycle.” Fortunately, I haven't seen any lately.
