Yahrtzeit is Yiddish. From the German jahr zeit you would think “year time,” therefore anniversary. It's used almost exclusively as the anniversary of someone's death. There are a bunch of them in the family this time of year, and we went to Friday evening synagogue services tonight because we missed the exact days of two of them this past week.
