That which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate,
but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find,
and not to yield.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Ulysses

As the quote states so eloquently, people of great heart and determination do prevail. This is the story of the Maydoney family. Eight children countless grand children and two people who lead the family through the good and the bad.

What is most remarkable is the fact that through tests of time and tests of will, the spirit of our family does not waiver. Having suffered personal issues of substance abuse, auto accidents, divorce, emotional grief and riffs in relationships, the Maydoney family always arrives back at the table together. We have seen more than our share of personal dispair and yet choose to focus on hope, happiness, and tommorow.

The future is with the children and the child in us never ceases. Whether its Dad's joking, Mom's snickers and giggles, or any one of the boys relentless teasing, we know how to laugh and, most importantly, share that laughter with the younger generation. And they carry on.

No one can deny Kelly's insatiable laughter, or Max's high spirits; Ken Jr's determination or Nel's warm affections; Sean's boyish playfullness or any of the children's love for their family. But the youth of this family is too vast to state it all here.

One thing is clear; in this family youth is not a matter of time, but a matter of spirit. Herman Melville once wrote, as if writing about the soul of our family:

In our youth is our strength;
In our inexperience, our wisdom.

stories
Trippin'
Mom and Dad could have angry moments for sure, but the moments that are most memorable were not angry moments but simple, funny ones. Like the many times Mom would sit at the dinner table with us and begin to talk as she stared out the window of our dining room. Few, if anyone, knew what she was talking about when she would say things like "I just don't get it!" or "Thats unbelievable!". Our response was always the same, to turn and look out the window to see what was baffling her, only to discover that while staring out the window, she was actually participating in another conversation happening at the table. This made for many laughs around the table.

Equally funny but always caught off guard were Dad's antics. Like the time Mom yelled to him in the kitchen to throw a bag and some hot water in a cup--Mom's code language for "I would likesome tea". We heard the tea kettle whistle and shortly after, Dad came walking slowly in to the living room with a tea cup in hand--we never used saucers for some reason.

His hands shaking as he tried to avoid spilling the steaming hot water. And from the cup rose a brown paper lunch bag. We all immediately caught it and laughed at him... a bag in a cup with some hot water. But that did not distract Dad from delivering the steeping hot cup of brown paper bag to Mom.

About two feet from her, BLAM! He tripped towards her with the cup spilling forward. Our heart beats skipped a moment as we were ready to see Mom showered with boiling hot water... but the joker had simply shreaded parts of the bag in the bottom of the cup and Mom was showered with confetti of brown paper bag. Our split second of fear was replaced by uncrontrollable laughter. Dad was trippin' and so were we!
