The End of Captaine Maréchal: 3 June 1940

by Prof. Errata

Background: For the GC I/1, the 3rd June would be the most terrible day of the campaign. Alerted against a Luftwaffe raid over the Paris region (Operation "PAULA"), the unit's MB-152s took off early in the afternoon from their airfield at Chantilly. There were three pilots left at the field then exempted from flying: Capitaine Maréchal, Sous/Lieutenant Trebod and Lieutenant Le Gentil, who were ordered to take off in the three last MB-152s available. The three Frenchmen launched and were circling the field to form their patrol, when a formation of Bf 109s fell on them at low altitude without a warning. The Bf109s been freed from escorting a returning raid.

Trebod was the first brought down, losing the life in his aircraft. Le Gentil, hit in turn, managed to parachute from his burning aircraft, atrociously burned on his hands and face. Maréchal retaliated, shooting down a Bf 109 - whose pilot parachuted in the suburb of Creil - but he was in turn pursued and shot down by two other Bf 109s. He crashed in his MB-152 around Saint-Leu. He was buried later at Senlis.

For one kill only, the GC I/1, which engaged success the Luftwaffe afterwards without over the Paris region, had suffered terribly unequal losses (two dead, one wounded and three destroyed aircraft). The Cne Maréchal and the S/Lt Trebod had found an heroic end and were mourned by all.
