Background: At dawn on 10-May-40, the Dutch Luchtvaarafadeling's 1e Jachtvliegtuig Afdeling (JaVa - fighter squadron) at the de Kooij Air Base had its twelve Fokker D.XXIs in the air over the base. The air base was raided by the Luftwaffe, two stafeln of Bf109Es who came to strafe. Positioned to their advantage, a rare treat during this campaign, the Dutch pilots dove on the invaders as they set up for a second pass.

Aftermath: The Dutch lost 4 D.XXIs. They believed they had shot down 5 Bf109Es, and damaged several more. As they landed after the Luftwaffe left, the ridiculous message came on the radio: “German Army troops have passed the borders of the Netherlands and the Government considers our country in state of war with Germany.”
A Messerschmitt had performed a belly-landing on De Kooy Airport. A Hauptmann descended and said, in an arrogant way, that it would be useless for us to offer resistance against the Luftwaffe. He changed his tune very quickly as he was grabbed firmly by a pair of strong Dutch hands and was carried off as a prisoner of war.
