Death of Hermes: 8-Apr-42
Background: On his way back from Trincomalee, Fuchida's force spotted
HMS Hermes and her escorts some 65 miles south of
Trincomalee. 90 divebombers, the second strike against Trincomalee, was tasked
with destroying the naval force.

Setup:
- Set the three vessels up, with Hermes around the center of the board, and
the two escorts at least 12 hexes away from Hermes, and 20 hexes from each
other. These vessels are at flank speed.
- The Vals enter in chutais of 9, organized as vics of 3. The Vals enter from
any side, 1 Vic per turn, at 6.0, speed 4.0, wings level. The Vals may attack
any ship.
- Every 10 turns (or less, if all the Vals attack and leave the board), a new
chutai enters.
Game Length: 40 turns
Special Rule: Compare final VPs. Japanese need to score 10:1 to win.
Additional Rules:
- HMS Hermes has no aircraft aboard.
- Make each vic of Vals: Vet, Reg, Reg. Each Val is armed with a single 250
kg bomb plus 2x 60 kg bombs. The bombs may be dropped all at once, or the two
60 Kg bombs may be released as a separate attack.
- The Aichi D3A Val dive bomber ADC was published in Air Power #40
- HMS Hermes, HMAS Vampire and HMS Hollyhock are
available in the British Far East Fleet set of
SDCs.
