or, Stompin' at the Savoy

I got involved in Fall 1999 with the MIT Gilbert & Sullivan Players and have been having a fabulous time ever since.
I've now done enough stuff with them that I had to create a separate page to catalog it.

DateShow Role Prod Staff Position Points of Interest Program Bio
Nov. 1999 Iolanthe Leila- Sheldon Brown's cool online photos of this production, some of which actually have me in them. [temporarily unavailable]
April 2000 Princess Ida Lady Psyche- Selected online photos of this production include my two solo numbers from Act II. Erica Schultz C (Lady Psyche) is trying to live two people's worth of life simultaneously. Fortunately, at least one of them is a performer, so she's back for her second MITG&SP appearance. She thanks everyone she loves, and sends special birthday wishes to Talia Lefton.
Nov. 2000 The Sorcerer Chorus-
  • Review in The Tech
  • Online photos. Hardly any include me (in the pink blazer), but several feature Matt (in the stylin' green vest).
  • "Sponsored" in part by www.jwwells.com.
  • Erica Schultz C (the Society Reporter) is Electronic Publishing Coordinator -- meaning she typesets books -- for The MIT Press. Her involvement with MITG&SP, dating from Fall 1999's Iolanthe, has enriched her life immeasurably ("Mmmm... liquid love...").
Jan. 2001* The Zoo - Program design Composed by Sullivan, lyrics not by Gilbert. Erica Schultz C (Program Designer) is taking a break from appearing onstage in order to do what she does all day long anyway: play around with words and pictures on the computer.
May 3-6, 2001 The Grand Duke [Chorus,
    Chamberlain**,
    Supernumerary**]***
Set crew; assisted with makeup. (Awarded the prestigious "Golden Hammer" by the tech crew for being the most helpful cast member in this show. I'm touched, guys.)
  • Opened on the 100th anniversary of its 1901 American premiere -- which was likewise staged by the students of MIT!
  • Sheldon Brown's spectacular photo gallery.
  • Erica Schultz C (Chorus, Chamberlain, Supernumerary, Set Crew) sang alto (Leila) in Iolanthe and soprano (Psyche) in Princess Ida. Having been cast as a tenor this time round, she now hopes to play Captain Corcoran in next fall's Pinafore.
    Nov. 2001 H.M.S. Pinafore A Cousin (i.e., Women's Chorus) Set crew, etc.
  • Lots of great pictures from the production (including one closeup of me and Matt; we got to be partners in this show)
  • Review in The Tech
  • A parody song that I wrote based on Pinafore.
  • Parodies, written by other cast members, that were performed in our Hack Night.
  • Erica Schultz C (Cousin Eliza, Set Crew, etc.) is, in real life, a sister and a cousin and an aunt, and has been known to enjoy flirting with sailors, though rarely any with such great hair.
Jan. 2002* Trial By Jury Counsel for the Plaintiff** Program design
  • The earliest extant G&S collaboration, and their only one-act operetta.
  • This production, produced by the "Instant Light Opera Co." in association with MITG&SP, will be performed for one night only at Arisia 2002.
  • N/A (no room in the program for bios!)
April 2002 The Gondoliers - Program design, set crew (mmm, lots of painting) Photos, reviews, etc., to come. Erica Schultz C (Program Designer, Set Crew) is taking a break from appearing onstage in order to do what she does all day long anyway: play around with words and pictures on the computer. Had she actually appeared onstage, this would have been her 6th MITG&SP show.
Nov. 2002 The Pirates of Penzance Daughter (Act I) / Pirate** (Act II) - - Erica Schultz C (Daughter/Pirate), when not rehearsing with MITG&SP, does book production for The MIT Press. If you count Trial by Jury, this is her 7th MITG&SP appearance. She is happy to finally know Pirates by heart, although she misses her original Frederic.
Jan. 2003* Sweeney Todd (concert performance) - Program design MITG&SP occasionally does non-G&S shows outside the regular semester calendar. N/A
    April 2003 Utopia, Ltd. Melene
    Phylla (opening soloist!)
    - Photos, etc., to come eventually Erica Schultz C (Phylla) wishes she were lying on a tropical island beach in real life, but until then, pretending under stagelights will have to do. This is approximately her 8th performance with MITG&SP. Besides theater, she likes writing and graphic design. She also likes boys who make her laugh, have long hair, can sing, are prone to political (and technical) ranting, and drive station wagons.
November 2003 Ruddigore - Set crew, assorted grunt work - -
April 2004 Thespis - Program design, assorted grunt work As rescored by Colin Johnson. (Sullivan's original music for this operetta is mostly lost, making Thespis the Holy Grail of G&S fandom.) Erica Schultz C (Program Designer, Set Crew) is taking a break from appearing onstage in order to do what she does all day long anyway: play around with words and pictures on the computer. She has now been involved with 13 MITG&SP shows, and appeared in 8 of them.

    *     IAP show (MIT's Independent Activities Period)
**   Cross-cast (i.e., written as a male part). Sometimes I get to sing these an octave up; sometimes it's as written. That's always fun.
*** A combination henceforth to be designated "Super-chamber-numerary-tenor-alto-chorus".
